Creating Height Layers to Keep Your Counter Display Tidy

Many counters hold plenty of goods, yet customers don't stop — because everything sits flat on one level, and the eye has no place to land. Start display with height: low in front, mid in the middle, tall at the back. Three layers give you hierarchy and rhythm at once.

The front edge takes low trays, rings and pendants in one neat row, at eye level when the customer leans over. The metal gold-edge multicolor velvet ring tray TP55 is made for this job — its wells are sized just right so rings sit still, and the dark velvet flatters both gold and diamonds. It's a regular on the front line.

The middle layer uses prop combos to build a second level, lifting your hero pieces to mid-eyeline. The dark gray microfiber with walnut solid wood display prop combo DJ series carries goods on suede tops and anchors them with walnut bases — fitting for pendants, name tags and brooches. The vertical presence is far stronger than flat laying, and with your hero piece on this level, it's the first thing a customer sees through the door.

At the back or against the background, place a full showcase set as the visual finisher — the counter's advertising spot. The light blue gold-edge four-leaf clover jewelry showcase set CC64 brings its own layering, and the four-leaf shape photographs well; standing at the rear edge, customers snap photos and post them, advertising for you.

I only learned this after a mistake. In the early years I tried flat display across the whole store — everything neatly lined up — and customers said, “You have a lot of stuff, but nothing I want to buy.” I changed just one thing: put the hero piece one level higher, straight in the sightline from the door. That piece outsold its previous week that same day. Nothing changed but the arrangement.

With the same counter footprint, creating height differences changes everything — hierarchy, focus, and per-square-meter yield. Two notes: leave breathing room between adjacent layers instead of cramming them together, and don't let tall pieces block the light on lower ones. Follow these three rules and you've got the basics of display down.
