Most people ask about color when buying display props, then about size — almost nobody asks about material. Yet material decides how long the props last and what the merchandise feels like on them. Velvet, microfiber and PU leather are the three mainstream choices, each with its own temperament. Pick wrong and you hurt the look, or even the goods.

Velvet is the veteran of jewelry counters. It absorbs light and looks luxurious — diamonds and platinum sit on it with all the light swallowed by the pile, stones glowing brighter. The downsides are obvious: it catches dust and lint and hates water marks. Heavy customer handling turns the pile gray and pilled; spilled water leaves a ring if not handled quickly. Velvet suits display zones and hero positions, and needs regular vacuuming — wiping hard with a wet cloth is a classic mistake that flattens the pile and kills the sheen.

Microfiber is the workhorse of recent years. Wear-resistant, stain-resistant, no pilling — rings don't slide, and it survives heavy try-on traffic. Stores like TP02 black microfiber multi-slot ring tray, TP41 grey microfiber modular counter pad and TP44 black microfiber stackable ring pad are practical picks for high-frequency try-on trays and daily counters. It costs noticeably less than velvet, and when it wears out, replacing it doesn't hurt.

PU leather takes the light-luxury lane: easy to clean, with a leather feel — ideal for gifting zones and new-arrival displays. The DJ01 grey-and-white PU leather jewelry display prop set is typical — the surface wipes clean and customers feel the polish. But PU leather fears direct sun and high heat; keep it away from spotlights, or it cracks within two years.

Then there are combos: wood with velvet or microfiber, the highest tier. DJ02 dark-grey microfiber with walnut-wood jewelry display set — the warmth of wood grain plus the light-absorbing pile makes hero pieces look commanding. TP03 walnut with gold-corner tray works beautifully for rings and pendants on main display.

Anyone who got burned knows the drill: cheap flocked velvet trays start shedding within two months, the fluff sticks to silverware, and customers return goods on the spot. PU props under a spotlight for a year wrinkle and crack — money wasted. The smarter move: sort props by usage frequency — microfiber for the try-on zone customers touch daily, velvet for the showpiece zone, PU and wood for gifting. One counter, materials divided by job: cheaper overall and better looking. Choosing material is a long-term account. Don't just chase the cheap upfront price.

Material must also match the "weight" of the goods. Heavy pieces like gold and large jade need sturdier trays — a too-thin base sinks and deforms, the goods sit unsteady, and customers feel it in their hands. Solid-wood bases with thick felt padding, like TP50 walnut slanted ring display pad and TP56 walnut multi-functional jewelry tray, carry weight with stability — prioritize these for heavy-goods zones.

One more hidden trap: static. Acrylic compartments and some plastic pads build static in dry seasons, attracting dust and lint — white pieces grow a fuzzy edge that kills the mood. Keep an anti-static spray at the counter, or favor velvet and microfiber in main zones. And velvet has a parameter worth knowing: higher gram weight means denser pile — squeeze two pads in the store and you'll feel which one is expensive.
