Small brands hit the same wall: they want a pouch in their own colour, then hear a five-thousand minimum and back off. Our ZB9 multi-colour velvet drawstring pouch starts at fifty pieces — purple, red, green, orange, yellow, grey, white, black, eight colours — so a small shop can test without pain.
Velvet is not 'the thicker the better'. Too thick and the drawstring will not close tight, and it looks clumsy; too thin and it shows light through and will not hold shape. ZB9 uses a medium-density pile, around 200 gsm single side — soft to the hand but it stands. The logo is foiled or embossed; too small and it blurs, so we keep the type above six points and the foil at about 140°C — hotter and the pile scorches, cooler and the gold will not stick.
The drawstring is double-strand, knotted and reinforced at the end, not the kind that comes apart when you pull. But velvet sheds — new pouches leave fine lint on the fingers for the first few opens, which is normal and washes off. To stop it properly we add a flocked liner layer inside; ZB9 presses a flocked velvet liner so the jewellery touches the inner layer and the outer pile is only for looks. The division is clear and the piece never gets scratched by the outer fuzz.
Among the eight colours, light ones fail most. Cream and light grey yellow in a warehouse over time, worse in the humid south, so light-colour pouches get their own OPP seal and silica in the carton, kept apart from dark ones. Dark colours are stable — wine red and forest green still hold after half a year.
On logo, one more note. Foil and emboss are two different tempers on velvet. Foil is bright and premium but the gold edge goes soft on light pile; emboss does not reflect and suits a minimal brand. We pair emboss with light pouches and foil with dark ones — the contrast is clean and it fails less.
Low minimum is ZB9's whole point, but it means QC has to be tighter. A fifty-piece order changes colour and starts the machine once; the waste from setup spread over fifty pieces pushes the unit price up. To actually save, group same colour to fill a carton, or pick two or three colours in one order. Most of our reorder clients try fifty first, then chase five hundred or a thousand once it sells.
On size, the common spec is 80x80x35 mm and it changes with the contents — a small bag for a single ring, a long bag for a bangle, different shapes but the same process: cut velvet, seam the edge, foil, fit the drawstring, inspect. The seaming shows a factory's hand; uneven stitch spacing twists the mouth, so we hold three stitches per centimetre and backstitch twice at the corners. Rings, studs, earrings, bracelets all fit; bangles need the long version. Drawstring tightness is yours to set.
In transit the pouches are light — thousands to a carton, freight works out to a few cents each. But do not pack them solid; velvet recovers slowly from pressure, and if it arrives flat the hand-feel is off. Ship them loose rather than crushed.
Colour management is the quiet skill here. Eight colours mean eight rolls in the cutting room, and a wrong roll in the pile is a wrong order. We tag each roll and pull by the order sheet, and keep a swatch of every colour so a reorder matches the first batch.
Getting the colour right the first time saves a reorder nobody wants to pay for.
